1997 PILOT TEST

Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) is a K-12 environmental education program that allows students to compare and share data with 1000's of other schools around the world using the internet. The Principle Investigators for two of the science focus areas (Soil Moisture/Soils and Hydrology) are located in Tucson and would like your help to evaluate new measurement protocols and activities. You do not need to be a trained GLOBE teacher to take part in this test.

We envision a two phase classroom test program. There are two modules: Soils and Hydrology. Phase I entails preliminary testing of just one module between Feb. 1 and Mar. 15. Phase II consists of testing the refined modules, using the one not done previously, between Mar. 25 and Apr. 15. Each module will require about a week of time (5x50 min) to complete in your class. Pilot testing just one or two protocols or activities can be done but we encourage you to sign-up for the complete modules. We have to complete the most critical phase (I) of classroom piloting by March 15 so we can meet other production and training deadlines.

The materials to be developed will include the following:

This is a great opportunity to get introduced to this program without attending a full four day training (which we hope will be in April at Biosphere 2). This is also an opportunity for your students to be given the assignment of testing these materials and coming up with their own criteria for its evaluation.

This is part of a national-scale pilot with interested teachers pulling info off the web. Much more information is available from our web site, under GLOBE III:
